Having been selected by the City of Sydney to design the new Redfern Neighbourhood Services Centre, SMITH DESIGN STUDIO combined the best of modern office planning with an environmental aesthetic and practicality.

Making the most of standard, natural and recycled materials, the new space included managers' offices, an open plan staff floor and a public service counter.

Environmental sensitivity and sustainability were achieved in the following ways:

• use of energy efficient lighting and switching
• increasing amount of natural light to work spaces
• specification of recycled timbers
• marmoleum flooring AELA rated
• woven image echo panels
• low VOC paints throughout
• AELA rated woollen fabrics
• 4 and 5 star rating wet area fittings
• reuse of existing furniture

This project was subsequently featured by the Design Institute of Australia at the Designex 2008 "Design for Sustainability" Exhibition.
